TRIGGERS

Triggers.jpg

Triggers for liomenoprosopophobia may include:

  • Hearing or seeing the M word spoken or written, especially if other people are saying or writing it deliberately and/or repeatedly without the sufferer's consent

  • Being in close proximity to the cause (or perceived cause) of the face-m*lting (chemicals, gases, nanorobotics, etc.) - especially if this was contained in a completely harmless everyday object or substance during the initial triggering (thus making it difficult to identify to the sufferer)

  • Being exposed to visual and/or audial media (like movies, TV shows, news articles, etc.) that contain the image of a person's face m*lting off - especially if this media was what caused the phobia to form

  • Seeing the image of a m*lting face show up in their nightmares

Trigger Prevention Tips:

  • Don't watch movies or TV shows that you know will trigger you

  • Install an image blocker extension to your web browser and turn it on anytime you want to search online about things related to m*lting faces or liomenoprosopophobia (WARNING: the Chrome extension doesn't work very well on Twitter, so use discretion)

  • Learn a movie or TV show's timestamps for liomenoprosopophobia triggers

  • If the movie or TV episode is new, check the MPAA rating and what it's rated for

  • Watch the movie or TV show in question with a person you trust, and have them tell you when to cover your eyes/plug your ears, and also let you know when triggering moments have passed

  • If using a computer: click away to a different tab until the triggering moment is over

  • If watching on TV (no computer hooked up): wear a sleeping mask (black color recommended)

  • Put in ear plugs until any triggering audio is over

Aftermath Self Care Tips:

  • Remove yourself from the triggering situation

  • Focus on your breath

  • Drink some water

  • Light a scented candle

  • Play with a fidget toy

  • Distract yourself with a fun game, crafting project, coloring, cleaning, etc.

  • Cuddle a favorite stuffed animal

  • Watch a trigger-free movie

  • Journal

  • Talk to your therapist

    • Vent to a trusted friend/family member (if you don't have a therapist or they're not available)
